Joining The Choir

We are always pleased to hear from anyone considering joining Blackburn Chamber Choir. Rehearsals take place each week on Thursday evenings at Blackburn Cathedral, from 7.45 p.m. to 9.45 p.m. Rehearsals and concerts are generally within school term times, and commitments falling outside these dates are advertised well in advance.

Membership FAQs

What are you looking for in members?

We are always on the lookout for new members with an enthusiasm for choral singing at a high level. Ideal candidates have experience singing in choirs with a varied repertoire, and a good standard of sight singing.

What kind of commitment is required to join?

The choir meets every week in school term time to rehearse – on a Thursday from 7.45 p.m. – 9.45 p.m. Due to the size and nature of the group, high attendance is important, although flexibility exists to accommodate the occasional absence. Membership of the choir costs £100 per year – this subscription goes toward the cost of concerts, as well as the week-to-week running costs of the group.

How often do you perform?

The choir undertakes a busy schedule of concerts and services, though some times of year are more active than others, particularly around Christmas and Easter. For more information on the choir’s forthcoming commitments, please see the Forthcoming Events page of the website.

What music do you sing?

Concerts range from programmes of unaccompanied music to larger-scale concerts (often joining with other choirs at the cathedral) with orchestral accompaniment. The choir’s repertoire spans the sacred and secular, encompassing music by the Renaissance masters such as Tallis and Byrd through to modern day composers. For information about recent programmes, see the archive section of the website.

How do I join?

Those wishing to explore membership of the Renaissance Singers are invited to Contact Us to arrange a date to visit us for 2 or 3 rehearsals. This is the best way for you to meet us and our members, and for you to get an idea of what it’s like to be in the choir! A brief audition would normally follow, at which candidates are invited to sing a piece of their own choice, and undertake some vocal exercises and sight-reading (don’t let this put you off – the audition is over in a flash, and takes place in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere!).
